New Flat

I've just moved to a new part of Edinburgh. Although we are still renting, the flat was unfurnished when we moved in, so we were treated to lovely white walls, wooden flooring, and not much else!

Have finally settled in, but unfortunately no phone or internet access at home yet. Our flat did not exist on the royal mail system so we couldnt' get anything installed! Within a week of our alerting them to it, however, they had fixed their system - not bad going :)

New Year, new goals

In my writing blog I pondered my New Years resolutions with the blogosphere in general. They were not all specific to writing, but some were - for instance to succed professionally as a writer this year (even if it's only on one project!).

I've also decided that I want to take up another nightclass when my degree ends. What this nightclass will be, I'm not sure, but the more I think about it the more I want to study British history, pre 1500. I'd particularly be interested in a class on the Dark Ages, as fact and fiction books dedicated to this time period have always interested me.

I'd decided to take more photographs - so have set up a photo journal on Flickr to put them in. I may even put some of them in here.

The other resolution I feel may be worth explaining is "to read at elast 25 books". When I've talked to people about this they seem, frankly, astonished that I would aim to read so few. When you equate this to a year's worth of reading, however, it's one book per fortnight. My current volume of studying will render this nigh on impossible, so I aim to read a little most evenings, and lots in my holidays.

I've really missed reading for pleasure lately, and after being given a collection of great books for Christmas (*) I'm determined to make good use of them.

In other news, I've been asked to blog for a magazine. My blog will be at:

What do I want to write?

Here's a question that i've been pondering for a while now - particularly since I started my Screenwriting course.

I know I want to write novels for older children, without a doubt. It's incredibly important to me that any writing career I end up with includes that goal within it.

I have problems deciding exactly what I want to do because I'm interested in writing for adults and children, over many genres and on film, television and radio formats.

At University so far the emphasis has been on film, and I'm excited about the prospect of getting more involved in television. We have had a couple of excellent classes over the last few days from a few different speakers, many of whom are involved in television - and the things they have had to say have been really motivating.

Last year I submitted an idea to Children's BBC - I think I will do so again this year. Hopefully my experiences to date will make it a better submission than it would have been previously!

I do still want to write feature films, along with shorts, as I find it an interesting industry, and the collaborative processes involved will no doubt be rewarding, given the right team. However, the more I hear about television, the more I want to work within than industry. I may be completely off the mark, but it feels like the writer has a more appreciated place within television, and they seem to be well nurtured. Sounds nice...

Just a little piece of information about myself...

I'm currently attending a full-time Screenwriting MA at the Screen Academy, Scotland. I live in the beautiful Scottish Capital City of Edinburgh, which also happens to be my favourite place in the world...

My original degree was actually in Mathematics (eek), but I've tried to avoid the subject as much as possible since then!

I have a short Scottish film going into pre-production, with shooting due to begin in March.

I started a novel for 9-12 year olds last summer, and hopefully when my university coursework relaxes I'll be able to complete it.

The Edinburgh Book Festival

I booked tickets for a few events this afternoon at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Managed to get tickets for the only events that really grabbed my attention - one in October with Margaret Atwood, and the other a talk with Enid Blyton's daughter.

I have also booked a place at a workshop designed for writers aiming their literature at the "10 years and over" age range, which could be interesting!

I notice that one of the lecturers from the Screenwriting MA - Mark Grindle - is doing a writing worshop. If I wasn't paying so much to go on the course, I'd go to this :)

The Play's the Thing

Last night I watched the first in the short series of channel 4 programmes called "The Play's The Thing". I found it really quite interesting, and will be watching the rest of the series!

Some of the script ideas sounded really quite good, but there wasn't one I heard that I wished I'd thought of! I haven't spent any time thinking about writing for the theatre since I was in high school, and it's made me wonder if I should give it a go.

I liked watching the "playwrights" in their interviews, as they were being asked some of the same questions for their plays as I did for my film script (in Screenwriting interview), so I could empathise with them a bit. More importantly, it's made me think that you probably get asked similar questions each time you submit something like this. If I spend some time actually documenting my thought processes, I might feel happier next time I'm asked those kind of questions.

Anyway, if you haven't watched the show it might be worth a look, especially if you're aiming to be a professional writer - playwright or not. There is a micro-site with more information I'll link to below.

Writing the book

In the last couple of weeks I've found myself thinking more and more about my novel - why I've been putting off doing it, why I decided I didn't like my ideas and so on.

I've started writing it again, using most of the ideas I'd had originally (at Christmas I'd decided these were no good, but I disagree with myself on that now!) and making it a bit more "adventurous" - hopefully!

I'm really enjoying it now, though. I don't know if perhaps the problem last year was that I'd just spent too long on it, put too much of myself into it and never submitted it anywhere for any sort of validation. Now, I'm quite happy to work on it as a summer project - with the long term goal to shape it into a perfect object worthy of being published!

I still want to try and work on some screenplays before term starts - get some practice in - but I'll keep on plugging away with this until I'm happy!

Perhaps at some point I'll even post sample chapters on here... Password encripted, for reading by invite only, of course!
